Women in Aviation

Aviation careers are no longer something students have to imagine from far away. They can see them, touch them, and ask real questions right here in Charlotte County.

That was the heart of the Women in Aviation Southwest Florida Chapter open house, held at the new Aviation Maintenance Technology School at Punta Gorda Airport. The event brought together students, educators, industry professionals, workforce partners, and community leaders for a closer look at how aviation careers can take flight locally.

For Charlotte County, this matters.

Aviation is one of the region’s strongest workforce opportunities, especially as Punta Gorda Airport continues to support growth in commercial service, aviation maintenance, aerospace education, and business development. However, a strong aviation economy needs more than runways and hangars. It needs people. It needs trained technicians, mechanics, pilots, operations professionals, and support teams. Most importantly, it needs young people who can see themselves in those roles.

That is where Women in Aviation makes a powerful difference.

The new Southwest Florida chapter creates a local network for mentorship, career exploration, and connection. It gives students a chance to meet women already working in aviation and aerospace. It also helps families understand that aviation careers are broad, practical, and attainable. Not every aviation career requires becoming a pilot. Many high-demand roles are in maintenance, technology, safety, operations, logistics, advanced manufacturing, and skilled trades.

That message is especially important in Charlotte County, where workforce development has become a key part of long-term economic growth. Recent aviation education investments, including hangar openings connected to Charlotte Technical College and Charlotte High School at Punta Gorda Airport, are helping students gain hands-on exposure close to home. The open house built on that momentum by showing students that training can lead to real career pathways right here in Southwest Florida.

The event also gave the community a look inside the new Aviation Maintenance Technology School. Attendees toured the space, met local aviation supporters, and learned more about how education, industry, and economic development can work together. For students, that kind of access can be a turning point. One conversation can spark a career idea. One mentor can make a difficult path feel possible.

Women in Aviation International has more than 20,000 members worldwide and focuses on building a supportive aviation and aerospace community through networking, mentorship, youth education, and workforce development. The local chapter brings that mission closer to Charlotte County students and residents.

For employers, this kind of chapter is also good news. A visible local pipeline helps grow talent earlier. It encourages students to stay engaged, build skills, and consider local opportunities after graduation. Over time, that strengthens the region’s ability to attract and support aviation-related businesses.

The open house was more than a one-day event. It was a signal.

Charlotte County is building an aviation workforce with intention. The Women in Aviation Southwest Florida Chapter adds another important piece to that effort by helping more people, especially young women, see a place for themselves in the industry.

And when students can see the runway ahead, they are far more likely to take off.
