Mark on the Move: Mid-County Regional Library Makerspace
October 13th, 2026

In a recent Mark on the Move visit, our BRE Manager Mark stopped at the Mid-County Regional Library Makerspace in Port Charlotte. The visit offered a look at how a community resource can connect creative exploration, practical skills, and the local business environment.
The Makerspace has equipment for 3D printing, wide-format printing, sewing, and digital cutting. For an entrepreneur, those tools raise a useful question: what could an early mockup, product sample, or sign concept teach a founder before a larger equipment purchase or production run?
The 3D printer also makes digital design tangible. A model on a screen can become an object people can examine, revise, and discuss. That connection brings product design and fabrication skills into view for students, jobseekers, career changers, and anyone curious about how an idea becomes something physical. It is a useful complement to formal workforce training and career exploration.ch
For a small business, the value is in having one more local resource to investigate before making a larger investment. A founder may want feedback on a rough concept, learn whether a design works at a different scale, or create a sample to discuss with a customer. The Makerspace is not a substitute for commercial production equipment or a full print service. It is a community resource that can help people ask better questions about what they need next.
That connection matters to the Careers on the Coast story. Career growth depends on more than a job opening. People also look for ways to keep learning, meet others, and put new skills to work in daily life. A community Makerspace makes creative technology more visible, while a library’s programs and study spaces offer additional points of connection for residents at different stages of work and learning.
The visit also showed another resource in the building: study pods outside the Makerspace. They create a quieter setting for focused work, online meetings, or study. A sign at the pods says reservations are required, which may make them useful for remote workers who need a defined place to concentrate between home and the office.
Libraries can be a “third place,” a shared setting beyond home and work where people spend time, learn, and connect. For Charlotte County, the Makerspace and study areas add practical options to everyday life. They help tell the Careers on the Coast story: a career move is also a community move.
