Charlotte County Schools and Aviation Industry Partner to Build the Future Workforce
Charlotte County is taking flight—literally—through an innovative partnership between Charlotte County Public Schools (CCPS), Charlotte Technical College (CTC), and local aviation companies within the Enterprise Charlotte Airport Park (ECAP). This collaboration is designed to equip students with the skills and certifications needed to enter high-demand careers in aviation, helping to build a strong workforce pipeline while strengthening the local economy.
Aviation Programs: A Direct Pathway to High-Demand Jobs
The aviation industry is facing a growing need for qualified professionals, and Charlotte County is proactively addressing this demand. Through career and technical education initiatives, students can gain hands-on experience and industry-recognized certifications while still in school.
At Charlotte High School, students now have access to two specialized aviation programs:
- Aviation Assembly and Fabrication
- Avionics Systems
These programs prepare students for careers in aircraft manufacturing, maintenance, and electronics, providing a seamless transition from high school to the workforce or further education. To support this initiative, the school is constructing a dedicated aviation hangar, set to open by the 2025-2026 school year. This facility will serve as a hands-on learning space, ensuring students gain real-world experience in aviation technology.
For those pursuing post-secondary education, CTC offers an FAA-certified Aviation Maintenance Technician School at Punta Gorda Airport. Established in 2018 with funding from the Florida Job Growth Grant Fund, this program provides training in Airframe and Powerplant Mechanics (A&P)—two crucial certifications for aviation maintenance careers. Graduates of this program are prepared to enter the workforce with in-demand technical skills, meeting the needs of local and national aviation employers.
Strengthening Charlotte County’s Workforce and Economy
By aligning educational programs with industry needs, Charlotte County is creating a talent pipeline that benefits both students and businesses. ECAP, a designated hub for aviation and aerospace industries, plays a key role in this initiative. The district’s strategic location near Punta Gorda Airport provides students with direct exposure to industry leaders and potential job opportunities.
This collaboration is more than just an investment in education—it’s an investment in Charlotte County’s economic future. By providing career-ready training in a field with significant job growth, CCPS and CTC are ensuring that students graduate with the skills employers need. At the same time, aviation businesses in the region can rely on a steady stream of highly trained professionals, reducing the skills gap and fostering long-term economic growth.
Conclusion
Charlotte County’s commitment to workforce development through aviation education is setting a precedent for other communities. By integrating industry-driven training programs into the school system, local students have a clear path to stable, high-paying careers in aviation. Additionally, as these programs continue to expand, Charlotte County is solidifying its reputation as a premier destination for both education and business investment.
