Bert King of Black Widow Harley-Davidson Receives Business Excellence Award

April 22nd, 2025

The Charlotte County Economic Development Office has awarded the Excellence in Business Award to Bert King, owner of Black Widow Harley-Davidson, in recognition of his extraordinary leadership and impact on the local economy and community.  Presented by Economic Development Director Kay Tracy, the award honors Black Widow’s transformation from a small business into a 25,000-square-foot destination featuring a 2,000-seat amphitheater, nationally ranked riding academy, and full-service restaurant. “Bert King’s vision turned a business into a hub of connection, entertainment, and philanthropy,” said Kay Tracy. “Their team has made Charlotte County a destination for riders and non-riders alike.”

Through the “Salute to America Foundation”, King has donated more than $2.5 million to support veterans, first responders, and hurricane recovery across Southwest Florida. More than $250,000 in direct aid was distributed following recent storms. The dealership has hosted more than 200 fundraisers and supports more than 50 charitable riding clubs. “Though they rarely seek recognition, their impact is undeniable,” Kay Tracy said. “This award reflects not only business excellence, but a legacy of giving.”

Here is a transcript of the speech that Kay Tracy read during the presentation of the Business Excellence Award.

Commissioners, Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is my distinct honor to recognize Black Widow Harley-Davidson for their outstanding contributions to the Charlotte County community and beyond. More than just a motorcycle dealership, Black Widow Harley-Davidson has become a hub of connection, entertainment, philanthropy, and economic vitality under the leadership of Bert King. Today, we celebrate their unwavering commitment to excellence, their significant charitable contributions, and their role in making Charlotte County a premier destination for riders and non-riders alike.

A Vision Beyond Business

Bert King’s vision extended far beyond the walls of a traditional dealership. What began as a small business in a strip mall has grown into a 25,000-square-foot, multifaceted entertainment and retail destination. Black Widow Harley-Davidson is now home to a 2,000-person amphitheater, a nationally top-ranked riding academy, and a world-class restaurant—all of which contribute significantly to our local economy and enhance the quality of life in Charlotte County.

A Commitment to Giving Back

While their business success is impressive, what truly sets Black Widow Harley-Davidson apart is their remarkable and often understated philanthropic efforts. Through Bert’s Salute to

America Foundation, they have quietly provided more than $2.5 million in support to veterans, first responders, and disaster relief efforts across Charlotte, Sarasota, and Lee Counties. Their foundation has helped feed the homeless, sponsored field trips for residents of the Veterans Home, and provided direct assistance to hurricane victims—whether through food, shelter, or financial aid to rebuild homes.

They don’t often seek recognition for their generosity, but the numbers speak for themselves. In the aftermath of recent hurricanes, the foundation distributed more than $250,000 in direct relief to those affected. Through partnerships with local charities, they have supported over 50 riding clubs dedicated to charitable causes, including veterans’ programs, children’s health initiatives, and cancer research.

A Hub for the Community

Black Widow Harley-Davidson is more than a business; it is a pillar of community engagement. Their venue has hosted over 200 fundraising events in the past three years, including cancer fundraisers, and celebrations of life’s milestones. They provide their facilities—including their pavilion, training rooms, and event spaces—free of charge to numerous nonprofit organizations, reinforcing their commitment to strengthening Charlotte County.

Recognizing Excellence

Today, we are proud to honor Black Widow Harley-Davidson with the Excellence in Business Award for their transformative impact on Charlotte County. Their contributions—both seen and unseen—have strengthened our community in immeasurable ways.

On behalf of the entire Charlotte County community, we extend our deepest gratitude to Bert King and the incredible team at Black Widow Harley-Davidson. Thank you for your vision, leadership, and generosity. Though you may be modest about the depth of your philanthropy, your actions speak volumes, and your legacy will be felt for generations to come.
