AI Education Event Inspires SWFL Students to “Hack the Future”
March 30th, 2026

Students from across Southwest Florida recently gathered at The Hatchery in Babcock Ranch for an interactive AI education event designed to explore how artificial intelligence will shape their future.
The program, titled “Hack the Future (The Right Way),” was organized by SWFL Rotary and the SWFL Interact Club. The event focused on helping young people understand artificial intelligence while encouraging responsible and thoughtful use of emerging technology.
Participants traveled from Fort Myers, Cape Coral, and Babcock Ranch to attend the collaborative session. The goal was simple: help students think critically about how technology will influence careers, education, and everyday life.
Rather than focusing on complex technical theory, the discussion emphasized real-world applications of AI. Students explored how tools like artificial intelligence can improve research, increase efficiency, and make information easier to access.
But they also talked about the challenges.
Students Explore the Benefits and Risks of Artificial Intelligence
During the workshop, students participated in conversations about both the opportunities and potential concerns related to AI.
On one side, participants identified ways artificial intelligence can improve the world:
-
faster research and data analysis
-
easier access to information
-
improved efficiency across industries
-
better modeling and problem solving
However, students also discussed potential risks and ethical questions. Some of the concerns raised included job displacement, environmental impacts, and the importance of maintaining human judgment when using advanced technology.
One key idea stood out throughout the discussion: AI should support human decision-making, not replace it.
As one presentation slide emphasized, “AI is the co-pilot. Humans are the captain.”
This concept—often called “human in the loop”—reminds students that critical thinking, empathy, and ethical judgment remain essential in an AI-driven world.
Rotary Leadership Helps Prepare the Next Generation
The initiative was led by Laura Gent Felker, Sustainability Chair for SWFL Rotary, whose vision helped bring the program together.
Her goal was to create an environment where students could explore technology while also thinking about leadership and responsibility.
The event also highlighted the leadership of SWFL Interact Club President Hailey Herren, who helped bring students from multiple communities together for the discussion.
By combining Rotary’s commitment to community leadership with student engagement through Interact, the event created a space where young people could ask questions, share ideas, and think about the future with curiosity and confidence.
Preparing Students for a Technology-Driven Future
Artificial intelligence is already reshaping industries—from healthcare and manufacturing to education and finance.
Events like this help ensure students are not only aware of these changes but also prepared to navigate them responsibly.
Through collaboration, discussion, and hands-on learning, the AI education event demonstrated how communities can help young leaders develop the skills needed for the future.
And judging by the thoughtful conversations taking place in the room, one thing became clear.
The next generation is already thinking about how to use technology the right way.
