Veterans in Charlotte County

Military Service Doesn’t End at Retirement. It Begins a New Mission in Charlotte County.

For many service members, taking off the uniform is not the end of a mission. It is the beginning of a new one.

Across Charlotte County, veterans continue serving their communities in different ways. They become business owners, teachers, healthcare professionals, first responders, entrepreneurs, skilled tradespeople, and public servants. The values they developed during military service continue to shape the workforce and strengthen the community long after active duty ends.

Charlotte County proudly recognizes those contributions. Home to approximately 30,000 veterans and designated as a Purple Heart Community, the county has become a place where military service is respected and where veterans can continue building meaningful careers and fulfilling lives.

Leadership That Transfers Beyond the Military

Military service develops skills that employers across every industry value.

Leadership, teamwork, adaptability, accountability, communication, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are qualities that cannot be taught overnight. Veterans bring these strengths into the civilian workforce every day.

Those skills translate naturally into careers in aviation, healthcare, advanced manufacturing, logistics, public safety, government, construction, engineering, information technology, education, and many other industries.

For employers, hiring veterans often means hiring people who understand responsibility, work well under pressure, and know how to accomplish a mission.

For veterans, those same strengths become the foundation for successful second careers.

A Community That Understands Service

Charlotte County is more than a place veterans move to after retirement.

It is a community that understands military service because so many residents have served themselves.

The county’s Purple Heart Community designation reflects an ongoing commitment to honoring military sacrifice, while local veteran organizations, community groups, and businesses continue supporting those who served.

That shared understanding creates an environment where veterans often feel immediately connected.

It is one reason so many military families choose to remain here long after leaving active service.

A Story That Reflects Many Others

Army veteran Tom Lloyd represents one example of how military service continues to shape successful civilian careers.

Lloyd served on Active Duty, in the Army Reserve, and with the Florida National Guard from 2002 through 2017 as a 13J Fire Control Specialist.

Following his military service, he continued a career in journalism and visual storytelling, earning three Suncoast Regional Emmy nominations and two Emmy Awards before joining Charlotte County Government as a Production Specialist.

Today, he helps tell the stories that connect residents with their local government and community.

His journey reflects something seen throughout Charlotte County: veterans continue serving, just in different ways.

Quality of Life Matters

Career opportunities are only one part of choosing where to live.

Veterans also look for communities that support family life, outdoor recreation, healthcare access, and opportunities to stay connected after military service.

Charlotte County offers all of those advantages.

From boating and fishing to waterfront sunsets, vibrant downtown districts, and year-round outdoor activities, the county provides the quality of life many veterans are looking for after years of military service.

For Tom Lloyd, who has spent nearly 86 percent of his life in Charlotte County, the reasons are simple.

“From the beaches to the sunsets to the food, there is no other place like it.”
