Game On: Sports Tourism Brings $64 Million to Charlotte County

A tournament weekend does more than fill fields and courts in Charlotte County. It can fill hotel rooms, restaurant tables and local businesses, too.

And that activity is adding up.

Southwest Florida Business Today reported in its August 2026 issue that sports tourism generated an estimated $64 million in economic impact in Charlotte County. According to the publication, 77 tournaments and events generated $53 million, while another $11 million came from 14 Tampa Bay Rays spring training games at Charlotte Sports Park.

Economic Impact Analysis Goes Beyond the Game

Behind those numbers are athletes, coaches, families and spectators who spend money throughout the community.

They need places to stay. They eat at local restaurants. They shop between games. And, in many cases, they spend several days in Charlotte County.

That is where economic impact analysis tells a much bigger story than the final score.

For example, Southwest Florida Business Today reported that Englewood Beach Waterfest generates about 4,650 hotel room nights and an estimated $5.5 million in economic impact. The event attracts more than 25,000 spectators, race teams, sponsors, vendors and media representatives.

More Visitors Mean More Customers

For Charlotte County businesses, sports tourism expands the customer base beyond local residents.

A family traveling for a youth tournament might book a hotel for several nights, eat multiple meals locally and shop while they are here. Meanwhile, larger events can bring thousands of visitors into the market at once.

That spending reaches hospitality, dining, retail, entertainment and other businesses. As a result, economic impact analysis helps show why attracting sporting events can matter to the wider business community.

Sports tourism also brings something businesses value: customers from outside the market bringing new dollars into the local economy.

Ultimately, the scoreboard tells us who won the game.
