The Southwest Florida Rotary Club recently recognized six graduating high school seniors through its 2026 Service Above Self Scholarships, a community-supported program that celebrates leadership, character, service, and the promise of future impact.

Each recipient received a $500 scholarship in recognition of the way they have already served their schools and communities. The 2026 scholarship recipients are Isabella Marulanda, Grace Stanley, Miftaul Ahona, Rory Farrell, Samaira Sethi, and Airianna Hudson.

For Charlotte County and the broader Southwest Florida region, stories like this matter.

Economic development is often discussed through the lens of sites, infrastructure, business growth, and job creation. However, a strong economy also depends on people. It depends on students who are encouraged to lead, serve, learn, and stay connected to the communities that helped shape them.

Scholarship programs are more than awards because they are early investments in the talent pipeline.

The SWFL Rotary Club’s scholarship initiative was led by SWFL Rotary Foundation Chair Sari Greene and the club’s scholarship committee. Funding was raised through community-supported events, including monthly Panera Bread fundraisers, a Jersey Mike’s fundraiser in Babcock Ranch, and a Wine Dinner at The Lakehouse Restaurant in Babcock Ranch.

That local support tells a larger story.

When businesses, civic organizations, restaurants, volunteers, and community members come together for students, they help build the kind of place where young people see opportunity. They also strengthen the relationships that make a region more resilient, connected, and prepared for growth.

The Rotary motto, “Service Above Self,” fits this work well. The students recognized through this program have already shown a commitment to making a difference. Now, as they move into their next chapter, they carry that service mindset with them.

For employers, educators, and community partners, this is the bigger takeaway: workforce development starts early. It starts when young people are supported, encouraged, and shown that their community believes in them.

Congratulations to the 2026 Service Above Self Scholarship recipients and to the Southwest Florida Rotary Club for investing in the future of our region.
