Tom Lloyd: Veteran Storyteller in Charlotte County

A veteran, Emmy-winning storyteller, husband, father, and public servant, Tom Lloyd shows how service continues to shape careers, community, and the stories that connect us.

For many veterans, service becomes the foundation for a lifetime of leadership, discipline, and community impact. For Tom Lloyd, that foundation not only shaped his path in the military, but also influenced a career dedicated to storytelling and public service in Charlotte County. The Charlotte County veterans workforce is a testament to how service continues to shape careers and communities long after military duty ends.

A longtime resident who has spent nearly 86 percent of his life in the community, Tom’s journey blends military service, journalism, creative media, and civic engagement. Today, as a Television Production Specialist for the Charlotte County Board of County Commissioners, he plays a vital role in helping tell the stories that connect residents to their local government and to one another.

His work behind the camera captures the people, places, and moments that define Charlotte County.

But long before Tom began documenting the community’s story, he was serving his country.

From September 11 to Military Service

Like many Americans, Tom’s decision to serve was shaped by the events of September 11, 2001.

Before the attacks, he had already considered military service. But witnessing the events of that day solidified his decision.

Shortly afterward, Tom entered the United States Army.

Over the course of a 15-year military career spanning 2002 to 2017, he served on Active Duty, in the Army Reserve, and in the Florida National Guard. His role as a 13J Fire Control Specialist required precision, technical expertise, and the ability to operate under pressure – skills that would later influence his approach to both media production and public service.

While Tom had already experienced life and career before joining the military, the structure and discipline of service left a lasting mark.

The experience reinforced habits that still guide him today, from punctuality and preparation to a mindset of planning ahead and anticipating challenges before they arise.

Military service also provided valuable leadership lessons.

Tom Lloyd recalls learning from both strong leaders and difficult ones, shaping his understanding of what effective leadership truly looks like.

Those experiences helped define how he approaches teamwork, mentorship, and responsibility in every chapter of his career.

A Creative Career Built on Storytelling

Long before Tom stepped into uniform, storytelling had already become a central part of his life.

Prior to entering the military, he had spent seven years working in broadcast news, gaining experience in journalism and media production. After completing his active service, Tom eventually returned to the newsroom, continuing to develop his craft in storytelling and visual media.

From early reporting roles to professional photojournalism and multimedia production, Tom built a career around capturing stories that matter.

Over time, his passion for storytelling continued to evolve.

What began as a professional pursuit became a lifelong discipline – constantly refining how stories are told through video, imagery, and narrative.

Even today, Tom believes there is always more to learn.

Every project, every interview, and every story presents a new opportunity to grow as a storyteller.

An Emmy-Winning Career in Media

Tom’s dedication to his craft has earned recognition across the broadcast industry.

Over the course of his career, he has received three Suncoast Regional Emmy nominations and two Emmy wins for his work in journalism and media production.

One of his early career highlights came when he was nominated and later won recognition in the Feature News Report category in 2018.

More recently, Tom earned both a nomination and a win in 2022 for the Arts and Entertainment News category for his work on the Artist Showcase series, highlighting creative voices and cultural contributors within the community.

While professional recognition is always meaningful, Tom views these accomplishments through a deeper lens.

As a follower of Jesus Christ, he believes his creative talents are gifts entrusted to him, and he approaches storytelling with a sense of responsibility.

For Tom, every story told and every frame captured is an opportunity to pursue excellence while reflecting truth and integrity.

Rather than viewing awards as personal achievements, he sees them as reminders of the purpose behind his work.

Bringing Storytelling to Local Government

Today, Tom continues that mission in his role as Television Production Specialist for Charlotte County Government, where he helps create the visual content that informs and engages residents across the region.

His work includes producing videos, highlighting community initiatives, and documenting the programs and services that shape everyday life in Charlotte County.

In local government, Tom believes storytelling serves a critical purpose.

Every resident, every business owner, and every family in the county has their own story about why they chose to live here.

Capturing those stories helps residents better understand their community, the services available to them, and the people working behind the scenes to support them.

For Tom, storytelling strengthens the connection between government and the public.

It builds transparency, encourages engagement, and transforms government from something distant into something shared by the entire community.

A Veteran Perspective on Charlotte County

As both a veteran and a longtime resident, Tom brings a unique perspective to the stories he tells.

Charlotte County is home to approximately 30,000 veterans and proudly holds the designation of a Purple Heart Community, reflecting the deep military presence and support network that exists throughout the region.

For Tom, that distinction is meaningful.

It represents a community that recognizes and values the sacrifices made by those who served.

Because of his own military background, Tom often approaches veteran stories with a deeper level of understanding.

When he captures stories about fellow veterans living and working in the county, it comes from a place of shared experience and respect.

He understands the challenges of service, the transition to civilian life, and the sense of camaraderie that continues long after military careers end.

That connection allows him to tell those stories authentically.

Veterans Strengthening the Workforce

Veterans also play an important role in Charlotte County’s workforce and economic growth.

Their leadership, discipline, and ability to work under pressure translate naturally into careers across industries – from aviation and public safety to healthcare, skilled trades, and media production.

Tom believes veterans bring unique strengths to the workplace.

Military training builds teamwork, adaptability, and problem-solving skills that help organizations operate more effectively and collaboratively.

Their commitment to service and their ability to perform in challenging environments make them valuable contributors across the entire community.

In Charlotte County, those strengths help support both local businesses and the broader regional economy.

Mentorship and Community Engagement

Beyond his professional work, Tom continues to invest in the next generation through mentorship and community involvement.

He currently participates in the Beyond School Walls program through Big Brothers Big Sisters, mentoring a high-achieving student at Port Charlotte High School.

His mentee is a senior who, despite being only sixteen years old, has already demonstrated exceptional academic ability and leadership potential.

Tom also mentors young people within his church community, Oasis City Church, continuing the cycle of leadership and guidance that shaped his own life.

For him, mentorship is another form of service.

Just as experienced leaders once helped guide his path, he now hopes to provide encouragement and direction for others navigating their own journeys.

Preserving Veteran Stories Through the Military Heritage Museum

Tom’s commitment to storytelling also extends beyond his work with Charlotte County Government. Through the Military Heritage Museum’s War Stories program, he helps preserve firsthand accounts from veterans and military-connected residents, giving their experiences a platform and helping future generations better understand the people behind the service.

The program reflects the same values that define Tom’s career: listening carefully, honoring service, and using visual storytelling to make personal history feel immediate, human, and lasting.

Family, Faith, and Balance

Outside of his professional life, Tom describes himself simply as a follower of Jesus Christ, a husband, and a father.

Faith plays a central role in how he approaches life and work.

When life becomes busy or stressful, he returns to his faith as a source of grounding and perspective.

Working for Charlotte County has also allowed Tom to find something that was difficult to achieve during his years in broadcast journalism – balance.

The demanding pace of news reporting often left little time for family life.

Today, his role in public service allows him to pursue meaningful work while still being present for the people who matter most.

Why Charlotte County Is Home

For Tom, Charlotte County is more than just the place where he works.

It is home.

Having spent the majority of his life here, he has watched the community grow while still maintaining the small-town character that makes it special.

From the beaches and waterfront sunsets to the local restaurants and close-knit neighborhoods, the region offers a quality of life that continues to attract new residents, businesses, and veterans.

“There is no other place like it,” Tom says.

That connection to the community is reflected in the stories he chooses to tell every day.

Through his work, he captures the people and moments that make Charlotte County unique.

A Story Still Being Written

When asked what excites him most about the future of Charlotte County, Tom sees continued opportunity.

As the community grows, new stories will emerge – new businesses, new families, new veterans choosing to build their lives here.

And as long as those stories exist, Tom will continue doing what he has spent his career doing best:

Capturing them.

Because for Tom, storytelling is more than a profession.

It is a way of serving the community he has called home for nearly his entire life.
