Allegiant suspends construction on Sunseeker Resort due to coronavirus concerns
Allegiant will suspend construction on Sunseeker Resort Charlotte Harbor until further notice because of the coronavirus.
CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. – Allegiant will suspend construction on Sunseeker Resort Charlotte Harbor until further notice because of the coronavirus.
The announcement came from the airline Wednesday morning.
The company said suspending the project is “necessary for social distancing to prevent community spread of COVID-19.” It will take a couple of days for the crews to clear the site.
Allegiant has already cut airline capacity by approximately 15 percent during April and May. That’s expected to grow to up to 35 percent in the coming months.
Stock buyback will be suspended and avenues for additional borrowing will be explored.
Allegiant’s CEO and President both announcing they will not take a salary. Other employees will take a 50 percent pay cut.
Economic Development Director for Charlotte County Dave Gammon said not to worry and that the resort will happen in time. It was scheduled to open in Spring 2021.
“It’s not going to be an eyesore. It’ll just be a little different for a little while,” said Gammon.
One of the project’s contractors said the future of the construction workers is still being figured out.
Renovations on Kingsway Country Club have also been suspended. The airline acquired that property to complement the resort.
