Manufacturing Day: You Might Be Surprised by What’s Made in Charlotte County

When people think about Charlotte County, manufacturing may not be the first thing that comes to mind.

But maybe it should be.

On Friday, Oct. 2, Manufacturing Day gives communities across the country a chance to see what modern manufacturing really looks like. The national initiative connects students, educators, families and communities with manufacturers and the careers behind the products they create.

Here in Charlotte County, those products might surprise you.

Made Here in Charlotte County

Local manufacturers create products connected to marine industries, pool and outdoor living, heavy equipment, energy resilience, precision components and more.

Earlier this year, 14 Charlotte County products were represented in Florida’s Coolest Thing Made in Florida competition. Together, they offered a glimpse at the range of manufacturing happening here.  That range includes everything from marine and outdoor-living products to precision components, heavy equipment and advanced technologies manufactured right here in Charlotte County.

That matters because manufacturing is more than what happens inside a production facility. It takes designers, welders, machinists, technicians, engineers, operators and problem-solvers to turn an idea into a product.

As a result, growing manufacturing also means growing the workforce behind it.

Building the Manufacturing Workforce

Advanced manufacturing is one of Charlotte County’s target industries. Therefore, developing a strong local talent pipeline is an important part of our economic development strategy.

That pipeline starts early.

Port Charlotte High School provides advanced manufacturing, engineering and drafting opportunities. Charlotte Technical College continues the pathway with hands-on technical training. In addition, the developing Southwest Florida Advanced Manufacturing Training Center will support training in areas including advanced manufacturing, CNC, welding and aerospace-related fields.

Those connections between education and industry are exactly what Manufacturing Day is designed to encourage.

FloridaMakes is also marking Manufacturing Day with a statewide discussion about how manufacturers and economic development organizations can work together to support business growth, workforce development and investment.

Take Another Look at What’s Made Here

Manufacturing Day gives us a reason to look beyond the finished product and recognize the people, skills and ideas behind it.

So, the next time you see an innovative marine product, industrial component, piece of heavy equipment or another Florida-made solution, take a closer look.

You might be surprised by what is being made right here in Charlotte County.
